Just
off Winton's main street we find Arno’s Wall, a rock and concrete
wall, handmade by an eccentric creator. The wall has the addition of
motorcycles, washing machines and almost every household item you can
think of - including a kitchen sink.
Once
around the block and we’re next to the North Gregory Hotel under a
sign, Royal Theatre.
“This
is probably one of the few open air theatres still operating in
Australia,” says Louise Dean, owner and operator. “Have a look
around now and come back tonight for our nostalgia evening where we
show old slides from the early days.
After
dinner and a beer we return to the theatre. The ancient projector
generates a lot of heat but gradually the old slides, some hand
written from yesteryear, appear on the screen. Qantas aircraft from
the pre-Jumbo jet era appear in several advertisements and it’s
appropriate as the airline’s first board meeting was held in the
Winton Club in 1921.
