Undara Lava Lodge

We sit on a granite outcrop above the Undara Lave Lodge as the light dims. Flocks of screeching rainbow lorikeets flit through the gum trees. Their larger relatives, white sulphur-crested cockatoos and grey and pink galahs call from higher up.

Wallabies become more active as night falls, moving silently around us along with bandicoots, little marsupials that look like giant rats.
Below us, the line of refurbished railway carriages are ideally shaped to fit between the eucalypts. The smell of food draws us towards the Fettler’s Iron Pot Bistro near the railway carriage dining cars. We enjoy open air dining on Mitchell’s Deck. A fire crackles nearby and the after-dinner entertainment is a singalong and a few bush tales.
Our room is a cosy restored railway carriage and the rocking motion and noise of wheels against railway lines isn’t needed to send us to sleep. Only the occasional calls of wildlife and night bugs break the silence.
